The distances that can be spanned by cables depend on the device-specific wavelength. In the respective applications, the maximum cable lengths must be taken into account. Passive connection of different fiber types is not permissible. The use of 50 µm fiber is recommended for future installations due to the greater range of gigabit Ethernet. Use of the 62.5 µm fiber is only recommended for existing network installations. In order to span very long distances, the use of singlemode cables with a 9 µm fiber is recommended.
