PROFIBUS can operate in the following versions:

• PROFIBUS FMS (Field bus Message Specification)
• PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation)
• PROFIBUS DP (Distributed I/O)

All protocol profiles can operate on a shared cable.

PROFIBUS FMS protocol

PROFIBUS FMS is the protocol for universal communication tasks at the field level.

PROFIBUS DP protocol

PROFIBUS DP is the protocol for distributed I/O. It supports extremely fast cyclic communication for small volumes of data.

PROFIBUS PA protocol

PROFIBUS PA is the protocol for process automation, in particular for intrinsically safe applications. With PROFIBUS PA, the PROFIBUS DP protocol is converted to the intrinsically safe physical bus properties in accordance with IEC 1158-2.

Thanks to the

• creation of an optimal subset of PROFIBUS message services and
• increasing the transmission rate,

the bus cycles times are negligibly small.

PROFIBUS DP features

• It is standardized to EN 50170 and IEC 61158-3 Ed. 2.

• Bus access control: Token passing with lower level master/slave
• Transmission rates 9.6/19.2/93.75/187.5/500 Kbit/s as well as 1.5/3/6/12 Mbit/s
• Data transmission using twisted-pair cable and fiber-optic cable
• Large range of components for connection to the fieldbus
• Universal applications
• Programming via the bus is also possible
• Modular expansion; the fieldbus can grow as requirements grow
• Automatic detection of the transmission rate in the case of slaves
• Open system; field devices from other manufacturers can also be connected (via GSD files)
• Clear overview of architecture; totally process-oriented configuration
• Direct data traffic between DP slaves
• Isochronous DP bus cycle
